Barack Obama Fails to Impress Babies

He might be the commander in chief, but (yawn) these babies just aren't that interested. It looks like the diaper-and-sippy-cup contingency is a politically-savvy bunch, according to this New York magazine slideshow, and they refuse to make eye contact with Barack Obama until he addresses the issues that matter to them. What those issues are, we have no idea, but until then, babies will not be patronized with cooing and cuddling, thankyouverymuch.

Head Lice! Parents Share Their Tips and Horror Stories

Aieeee! Lice!

They are about as welcome on your child's head as Godzilla at a downtown Tokyo sushi bar.

For all the horror they produce -- in both kids and their parents -- head lice are not an uncommon problem in childhood. Still, you want to give them their walking papers as soon as possible.

We asked contributors to Seed.com, AOL's website for freelance writers and photographers, to share their head lice-related memories and tips for giving these creepy crawlers the bum's rush.

'Head' Counselor

"During the one and only year I worked as a camp counselor, I was prepared to deal with mosquitoes, ticks, even spiders," recalls Shellie Braeuner. "But when first one girl, then several, then my entire cabin, started scratching their heads, I didn't need to scratch mine."

"A lice check turned up the tiny livestock on every head in the cabin, including mine," she adds. "I spent my only free weekend of the entire session using all washing machines in the only laundromat in the tiny town near the camp washing every stitch in that cabin."

Mom Imagines Baby's Dream World in Mila's Daydreams Blog

What new parents haven't wondered what their precious little bundle was dreaming about when in the kind of deep slumber only a baby can sleep?

The seriously creative Adele Enerson, an advertising copywriter and concept designer, decided to create imagined scenes of her daughter Mila's dreams, which she conceptualizes and photographs during Mila's naps and posts on her blog, Mila's Daydreams. Adele, we know you probably need a nap, too, but keep the adorable photos coming!

Take Me Out to the Ballgame ... With the Jonas Brothers

The multitalented (and seemingly overscheduled) Jonas Brothers probably need a vacation. They're not taking one.

Instead, the ubiquitous trio is touring the country with their Road Dogs softball team (and no doubt sparking a new appreciation for the game in their legions of squealing tween fans).

'SpongeBob' and Other Names Our Child Wanted to Name the New Baby

Magician Penn Gillette and his wife named their baby daughter Moxie CrimeFighter.

That raises an interesting question: "What the $#@!?"

Moxie CrimeFighter sounds like a name another kid would come up with. Children can be extraordinarily clever when it comes to naming other children. And we're not just talking about colorful odor-based nicknames.

We asked contributors to Seed.com -- AOL's freelance website -- to share some of the names their children suggested for siblings. Here are some of the best responses.

"After my husband and I gave our daughter Sam the big job of helping us name our son, she immediately turned to us and very seriously stated 'SpongeBob.' I tried to explain that "SpongeBob" wasn't really a name. 'But Mom!' she exclaimed, 'SpongeBob is a cute name!' " -Melissa Vacca

"When our 4-year-old daughter was informed she would have a new baby brother or sister in a few months, and when asked what to name the said child, she replied, 'Let's name the baby after the dog!' Whom she also named: 'Peanut butter.'"

Now's your chance to ask!

The first lady will chat exclusively with AOL readers in a live web chat at 10 a.m. ET on Tuesday, July 13.

As parents, we love Michelle Obama's dedication to fighting childhood obesity through her "Let's Move" campaign, which she'll talk about with senior editor Jennifer Fields from our sister site, AOL Health.

So what do you want to know? Her guilty food pleasures? How she and the girls deal with the food at all their social engagements? Or how about how her own mom, Marian Robinson, refuses to succumb to a healthy diet?

Send your questions to askmichelleobama@aol.com and we'll send them her way.

You're Not Alone: Michael Pollan's Kid Was a Picky Eater

If you're questioning your parenting skills and cooking prowess because your little one refuses to consume anything that's not white, packaged, or offered with a bribe, don't fear: Best-selling author and food authority Michael Pollan has been there, too.

"Everyone knows about picky eaters but he was in a whole class of his own," Pollan, brother of actress Tracy Pollan, tells ParentDish's sister site, KitchenDaily.

Pollan says he didn't fight with his now 17-year-old son over food, but he would employ subtle tricks to get his son to eat, like getting him to munch on veggies in front of the TV. "Kids will eat anything while they're watching T.V. They don't know what they're doing."

AOL Wins Major Victory in Child Porn Case

In a case involving a defendant who distributed child porn over the Internet, a federal appeals court ruled in AOL's favor, an enormous win for AOL and ISPs, according to Chris Bubb, the chief attorney who worked on the case. Below, Chris talks about the issues in this litigation, AOL's proprietary technology that detects illicit images and what the victory means for the company, ISPs and law enforcement.

What was the case all about?

US v Richardson was a criminal case out of North Carolina in which the defendant Richardson was caught by AOL attempting to send child pornography over our e-mail. As a part of a process we have in place, AOL reported the attempt to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which, in turn, referred the matter to law enforcement for prosecution. Richardson pled guilty to distributing child pornography, but reserved the right to appeal. The issue on appeal was whether the process used by AOL to screen for child pornography in e-mail and referred to NCMEC made AOL an agent of law enforcement and thereby violate the defendant's Fourth Amendment right against unreasonable search and seizure. Richardson also challenged the constitutionality of the child pornography referral statute itself.

Does the ruling have an impact beyond AOL?

Yes. AOL has shared its detection technology with other ISPs and if the court had found that the process violated the individual's rights, it would have undermined the use of the process by any company. Moreover, if the statute had been ruled unconstitutional, it would have been a major setback for nationwide efforts to curb child pornography.

AOL uses its own special technology to intercept child porn – how does it work and who developed it?

AOL has a process called the Image Detection Filtering Process (IDFP) that establishes the digital fingerprint of every file that's uploaded to be sent in e-mail. Every time an e-mail is sent, the IDFP automatically generates a fingerprint of an attached or embedded file and compares it against the library of known image fingerprints. If there's an exact match, it's virtually certain that the matching file contains child pornography. The file and attendant identifying information is then automatically sent to NCMEC for possible referral to law enforcement. Criminal cases, like Richardson's, can result and the target can be prosecuted. The IDFP, which is really the linchpin of the case, was designed several years ago by John Ryan, who heads the Criminal Investigations team, and Don Colcolough, who testifies in trials for crimes related to the AOL-owned networks and services.

How much progress are ISPs and the government making in the battle against child porn?

The ongoing battle against child pornography is an ongoing struggle, but the IDFP technology is a major advance in the deployment of sophisticated technology to eliminate child pornography from AOL's network and to get the evidence into the hands of law enforcement. Because IDFP is automated, it's error free, efficient and reduces the number of times AOL employees have to deal with child pornography directly.
